The Arts
At Tesseract School, our visual and performing arts programs follow our philosophy of educating the whole child by providing students with a variety of ways to exercise their creativity and express themselves.
Visual Arts
Tesseract’s visual arts classes encourage exploration, discovery and self-expression in a discipline-based approach. Special attention is given to integrating the visual arts with core curriculum classes, thereby enhancing students’ academic and aesthetic appreciation of their courses.
Upper school students who attended middle school at Tesseract have the opportunity to participate in classes offering a continuation of Tesseract’s rich visual arts program in addition to exploring the use of technology as a media tool
Through relationships with The University of Advanced Technology and Arizona State University, students are able to experience real-world applications of technology and the arts. Students who are new to Tesseract have the opportunity to experience the core art curriculum, including exposure to the three aesthetic views and the development of skills and techniques which enable students to use visual expression in all areas of their academic pursuits.
In addition to studio work in the classroom, students are introduced to local and international artists and have the opportunity to exhibit their works in private and public gallery showings through relationships with the Phoenix Art Museum, The University of Advanced Technology, Arizona State University and other community organizations.
Students who choose to further explore the visual arts through the college level and beyond will be well-versed in the experiences and techniques necessary to achieve their desired goals.
Performing Arts
In Tesseract’s high school, students are offered the opportunity to participate in Dramatic Film, Rock Band and Dance.
Dramatic Film
Dramatic Film
combines acting and filmmaking. In the acting portion of this class, students improve upon their acting skills through participation in activities such as pantomime, improvisation and scene work. In December, students perform in a dramatic production for peers, parents, faculty and staff. Through filmmaking activities, students learn proper camera techniques and how to use editing software to complete several short-film projects. In the fall, films are submitted to the Arizona Student Film Festival; in the spring, students have the opportunity to attend Phoenix Film Festival workshops.
Rock Band
In Rock Band,
high school students learn to play a variety of rock songs spanning the 1960’s through today. The class’s band includes guitars, drums, keyboard and vocals. Through this class, students gain an understanding of what it takes to be a successful member of a band, learn to play and rehearse in front of others, understand how their instruments interact with others and increase their confidence in performing in front of crowds. Rock Band participants have the opportunity to play at several Tesseract events for peers, family, faculty and staff.
Dance
Students taking Dance
work to master the fundamental skills involved in dance as they work with the instructor to create a compelling performance for the Tesseract community.
Vocal Ensemble
While not currently offered as an elective, students interested in honing their singing skills can participate in vocal ensemble after school. In this class, students strengthen their singing skills and gain further knowledge of musical concepts, vocal production, music notation reading and singing in an ensemble.
