The Arts

When others are cutting and trimming programs, the arts are, and will continue to be, an integral component of our curriculum. Through our visual and performing arts programs, student-artists learn to embrace the creative process, understand the cultural and historical significance of the arts, and recognize the value and impact of the arts throughout their lives, providing them with a rich, well-rounded education that nurtures their creative sides.

Our arts programs foster exploration and discovery, encouraging participation and self-expression in a discipline-based approach. In all grade levels, Tesseract students explore the arts through art history, discussion, observation, literature, song, drama, and the production of artwork and performances through integrated individual and group projects. Through close cross-curricular collaboration with faculty members, the arts enhance students' academic and aesthetic appreciation of their courses. Units covering topics such the history of the West are enriched by the arts through visits from renowned Western artists, learning the techniques and history of Western art and, singing the songs and performing the dances from those times.

Education in the arts also promotes social, motivational and problem-solving skills for students as well as self-esteem. At Tesseract each student is recognized as an artist. Students of different learning styles all have opportunities to create, learn and succeed, and are encouraged to do so at their own rates of development. Through encouragement to create work that is personally satisfying, students build the confidence to share with others. Starting in early childhood and throughout all grade levels, Tesseract students express what they have learned in the arts through such activities as grade-level concerts, art shows at prominent local galleries and museums, rock band and choral performances at annual events and the spring musical at a professional theater.

Studies show that learning through the arts produces greater academic performance for students. At Tesseract, our rich performing arts curriculum and real-world experiences further engage students in learning, encouraging them to be creative and inquisitive, while igniting a respect for and sprit of the arts that last a lifetime.
