Service Learning
Service learning is an integral part of Tesseract School's curriculum for students in all grades. Through Kids Who Care (KWC), our school-wide service-learning program, and Tesseract Action Force For You (TAFFY), students learn the importance of being an involved member of both the local and global community.
The Kids Who Care charities that Tesseract’s students and educators have selected together expose students to a wide range of organizations—from the Encore Senior Center to Liberty Wildlife to St. Mary’s Food Bank—, enabling them to develop a broad base of skills for problem solving and citizenship, and preparing them to become ethical and compassionate citizens with a global perspective.
Throughout the year, students devote time to service-learning projects geared to their ages and their classroom curriculum, such as our second-graders, who collect clothing items for Arizona Children’s Burn Camp (Camp Courage) while learning about the five basic needs in social studies, and our eighth-graders, who help build and maintain trails in the Children’s Eternal Rainforest on their class trip to Costa Rica, which focuses on sustainability and science curriculum. In addition to multiple projects throughout the year, there are also two school-wide Kids Who Care days in which all grade levels participate in service-learning projects simultaneously, with the middle and high school students and faculty visiting and helping at non-profits Valley-wide.
At Tesseract, we are dedicated to providing students with hands-on experiences that enable students to bring meaningful connections to what they are learning in the classroom with the greater community. Through Kids Who Care, our students are learning firsthand that their individual acts can make a positive difference in the lives of others.
