Foreign Language

As we continue to move towards a more global society, the importance of understanding other cultures and the ability to communicate in multiple languages is increasingly important.  At Tesseract, our foreign language program teaches students about the people, culture, and how to communicate in second languages in the same manner as students are taught in their native languages—not by memorizing vocabulary words and sayings from textbooks, but in authentic situations and through a flexible, layered curriculum.

Incorporated throughout our curriculum, educators from all subject matters collaborate to integrate lesson plans with Spanish and Mandarin classes, drawing cross-curricular connections and reinforcing concepts and themes through art, literature, humanities, social studies, service learning and even class-trip curriculum, such as the eight-grade trip to Costa Rica and the junior year trips to South America and China.

Through our core curriculum and foreign language program, students are exposed to the rich diversity and cultures of Spain, Latin America and China as they learn to read, write and speak these languages while gaining an understanding of the people who speak them.

Hands on experiences, such as El Mercado de Tesseract, a school-wide cultural event where students, faculty and staff interact in Spanish at an authentic Mexican Mercado, planned and run by students, and the annual Spanish Club trip to Agua Prieta, where students, faculty and parents travel to Mexico to work with the Rancho Feliz Charitable Foundation, further incorporate the ongoing knowledge students are attaining in meaningful, hands-on applications.
