Physical education & Athletics
At Tesseract, the physical education department facilitates a sequential, instructional program in which students develop physically active lifestyles that promote lifelong fitness, good health and the love of athletics.
Our curriculum of skills and concepts promotes teamwork and collaboration, skill development, positive self-concept, supportive social interactions, leadership ability and moral development.
In middle school, emphasis is placed on physical fitness and developmental activities. The central focus at this level is team sports and improving sport skills while enjoying competition through participation. Our new 10,000 square foot, multi-purpose sports pavilion and regulation-size soccer field enable us to host athletic events at our Shea campus throughout the school year.
At the start and end of each year students participate in the Presidential Fitness Test to gauge their increased physical fitness. Tesseract School develops each student in four major and unique areas of growth:
- The development and maintenance of a personalized level of physical fitness.
- The development and enhancement of movement competency.
- An understanding of movement and movement principles.
- An understanding and passion for sports, sportsmanship, competition and teamwork.
Mountain Valley Athletic League
Tesseract School is a member of the Mountain Valley Athletic League (MVAL). Since its beginning more than 30 years ago, MVAL has provided an opportunity for private schools to participate in a competitive athletic environment. MVAL has eight member schools in the Phoenix metro area. Throughout the academic year there are four seasons; each season there is one competitive sport for girls and one for boys. Girls participate in volleyball, soccer, softball and basketball; boys participate in flag football, basketball, soccer and baseball. Each season consists of approximately six or seven games plus a tournament. Teams practice during the week and play games throughout the week.
