Physical Education
At Tesseract School, the physical education department facilitates a sequential, instructional program in which students develop physically active lifestyles that promote lifelong fitness, good health and the love of athletics.
Our curriculum of skills and concepts promotes optimal development of physical and mental wellness among youth – with emphasis on skill development, positive self-concept, social behavior, leadership ability and moral development.
In early childhood, activities are individual in nature as students begin to develop gross motor skills. In kindergarten and first grade, activities progress from individual to team sports, centering on movement and movement principles. At this level, students develop body identification and body management skills as they begin to develop greater gross motor skills. In second and third grade, initial instruction in basic sports skills begins, including a number of lead-up activities, helping students to use newly learned skills in a small group setting, as they continue to develop their motor skills. In fourth grade, an increased emphasis is placed on physical fitness and developmental activities. The central focus at this level is team sports and improving sport skills while enjoying competition through participation.
At the start and end of each year students participate in the Presidential Fitness Test to gauge their increased physical fitness. Tesseract School develops each student in four major and unique areas of growth:
- Development and maintenance of a personalized level of physical fitness.
- Development and enhancement of movement competency.
- Understanding of movement and movement principles.
- Understanding and passion for sports, sportsmanship, competition and teamwork.
