Library
The goal of our library program is to encourage Tesseract students to develop a love of reading and of books, establish lifelong reading habits and develop the skills necessary to access and use information effectively and efficiently for success in the 21st century.
Incorporating the American Association of School Librarians’ Standards for 21st Century Learners, students are taught the skills needed to gather, interpret, use and evaluate information in all formats, including books, reference databases and online resources.
Tesseract’s early childhood students enjoy visiting the library to look at books and learn basic library manners. Students in kindergarten through second grade focus first on reading support, then traditional library skills and the beginnings of research skills. Third and fourth-grade students focus on information literacy and research skills, such as learning Web-search basics, Web site evaluation and utilization of library article databases. Favorite exercises include “Spot the Fakes,” a lesson on recognizing Web site hoaxes and scams.
