Kindergarten
Interest and curiosity go hand-in-hand with learning in our lower school program. Students' motivation and eagerness to learn come from an intrinsic interest in their world — trying new things, making mistakes and exploring new ideas. Tesseract's student-centered, full-day kindergarten program prepares children for school in a safe, nurturing and developmentally-appropriate environment.
Our integrated thematic curriculum stimulates young students and easily captures their interest and curiosity by linking curriculum-based concepts and skills to daily life experiences.
Public speaking, presentation and listening skills are developed through Morning Meetings. This is a time for young students to come together and share not only what they are learning, but information that is special to them—such as birthdays and other news—with the lower school community in a supportive environment.
In mathematics, Tesseract kindergarten students come to understand number-concepts through the exploration of concrete materials and models. The magic of reading and writing is introduced to our students through Jolly Phonics, a multimodal, multisensory phonics program. Through Jolly Phonics, kindergartners learn the letter-sounds in an enjoyable, interactive manner, supporting them as they become readers, writers and spellers, each at their own pace.
Language arts and mathematics centers, as well as science and social studies, are presented through an approach that teaches core concepts and provides hands-on learning experiences. Four days a week kindergartners attend Spanish class, part of Tesseract’s core curriculum, in addition to music, art and library — with technology woven throughout — multiple times each week.
We recognize the importance of physical fitness and play as young children come to understand their world, so students enjoy physical education classes and have plenty of time for free-play throughout the week, both indoors and out.
As important as our academic curriculum is our social curriculum, Responsive Classroom®. Knowing each student individually, culturally and developmentally, and recognizing and celebrating each other’s similarities and differences, we create a culture of respect and reflective social interaction with students, educators and the rest of the community.
