grade 1
First grade at Tesseract is an exciting adventure in student-centered learning. Our integrated thematic curriculum stimulates young students and easily captures their interest and curiosity by linking curriculum-based concepts and skills to daily life experiences.
Students start their day as a group, greeting one another and sharing news and class projects in the lower school Morning Meeting. This experience brings the lower school together as a community and teaches children to be good listeners and confident public speakers. In first grade, our core curriculum includes an emphasis on language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and Spanish, with technology integrated throughout the program.
Language arts includes Jolly Grammar, an extension of kindergarten’s Jolly Phonics, which aids in teaching language forms in addition to reading, writing, spelling and grammar. Writing skills are further enhanced as students are introduced to the Six Traits of Writing. The lower school library program further supports these concepts and skills, along with the introduction to legends and fairy tales.
In mathematics, students learn problem solving, creative thinking and computation skills. Tesseract first-graders work with mental mathematics, time, money, measurement, patterns, and addition and subtraction facts after building an understanding of numbers through the exploration of concrete materials and models. In science and social studies students learn about weather, arctic animals, spiders, insects, the community, maps and globes. Students are encouraged to go beyond basic expectations as they explore and discover, celebrating the joy of learning.
Visual
and performing arts, library and physical education are integrated into the first-grade curriculum in addition to hands-on activities, field trips and service learning projects, continuing the development of students’ abstract, creative and critical thinking skills while further enriching their educational experience.
As important as our academic curriculum is our social curriculum, Responsive Classroom®. Knowing each student individually, culturally and developmentally, and recognizing and celebrating each other’s similarities and differences, we create a culture of respect and reflective social interaction with students, educators and the rest of the community.
