FAQ

Parents already pay tuition for their children to attend Tesseract School. Doesn't that cover everything?

While tuition does cover a portion of the cost of educating your child, it does not take care of everything. At mature independent schools, 15 to 20 percent of the budget comes from donations like yours. Attracting and retaining superior teachers, keeping classes small, enriching the curriculum and providing quality programs – these are the things that make our school special. Your generous donations help ensure that your child gets the richest education possible. Donations also allow us to provide financial aid to students who qualify, enrolling a student population that is highly diverse, talented and motivated.

Why doesn't Tesseract School charge what it costs to attend?

We want to make Tesseract accessible to as many students as possible. At full cost, our school would be markedly homogeneous, and would no longer represent the vision of the Tesseract community or its child-centered mission. Greater diversity in our student body enriches the educational experience for everyone.

A gift to the School is tax deductible, whereas tuition is not. This gives each family the opportunity to write off a portion of their child's education.

My child will be graduating soon. Why should I give now when the programs offered won’t be available until after my child leaves?

Because of parents before you, we are able to provide many of the things that your students are benefiting from now. While your child may not see the direct benefits of your gift, you will know that you are helping others, similar to gifts of those before you are helping your child. It also benefits your child that Tesseract has a solid reputation and a long-standing tradition of excellence.

I thought the special events were held to raise funds for the school. Isn’t that enough?

The special events that the school holds are just part of the comprehensive fund-raising program. In addition to raising money, they also raise awareness and build a sense of community. Participation in these events is much appreciated. However, the special events are often targeted to specific areas of need, such as the performing arts program or technology. Gifts to the Tiger Annual Fund will benefit all programs and areas within the school.

How does the school benefit from my gift?

There a number of benefits to making a donation to Tesseract.

  • Tesseract is able to maintain small class sizes, providing a better learning environment for your child.
  • With the ability to retain and support our outstanding teachers, your child is able to have a consistent transition from grade to grade.
  • We are able to continue offering strong academic programs, preparing your child for his or her life.
  • Donations support the performing and visual arts programs, the athletic teams, Spanish instruction, the enrichment programs, and the many guest visitors and field trips arranged by the school, allowing for a well-rounded education.
  • Improvements to our grounds and facilities depend on donations.
  • Financial-aid resources help provide a diverse and talented student body.

Why is Tesseract an independent school?

Tesseract School is a member of NAIS – the National Association of Independent Schools. NAIS defines independent schools as being distinct from other non-public schools in that they are independently governed by a board of trustees, and they are funded primarily through tuition, charitable contributions and endowment income. To be eligible for membership in NAIS, schools must be accredited, nondiscriminatory, 501(c)3 non-profit organizations.
