RUTH AND DAVID LEARNER SCHOLARSHIP
FOR TESSERACT SCHOOL
PARADISE VALLEY, ARIZONA—August 16, 2011—When loved ones pass away, we reflect on the meaningful times we shared, as well as the things that were important to them throughout their lives. For David Learner, who passed away in May of this year, family and friends were very important to him, as was his desire to help those in need. To honor his memory, his family created the Ruth and David Learner Scholarship for Tesseract School.
“Our father was an extraordinary man. He never ignored the needs of anyone who was wanting,” said Nathan Learner, Tesseract School board trustee. “Education and helping children in need, in particular, were driving forces for him and continue to be for our mother.”
The Ruth and David Learner Scholarship for Tesseract School was started by the family and funded by family and friends. The scholarship was created to provide another opportunity for academically talented high school students who would thrive in Tesseract’s unique, innovative, student-centered program to attend the school who otherwise may not be able to afford to do so.
“Tesseract is what we consider to be the watermark for excellence in education in Arizona,” Learner continued. “My parents were able to see firsthand what a Tesseract education embodied because their grandchild—who has attended Tesseract since preschool and is now entering sixth grade—continues to absolutely thrive.”
The Learner family hopes this scholarship will “…enable more students to experience all that Tesseract has to offer including integrated class projects, curriculum-based class trips, leadership opportunities and the extraordinary commitment of faculty who are focused on fully engaging each and every student.”
“We are honored by the legacy the Learner family has created in founding the Ruth and David Learner Scholarship for Tesseract School,” said Nigel Taplin, Tesseract’s head of school. “This generous gesture will enable the school to offer the opportunity and gift of lifelong learning and academic excellence to high school students who otherwise might not consider Tesseract due to financial limitations.”
In addition to the Ruth and David Learner Scholarship and need-based financial aid, in keeping with its commitment to academic excellence and its whole child approach, Tesseract offers a variety of scholarships in the following areas: science, mathematics, humanities, foreign language, performing and visual arts, leadership, technology and athletics. Individuals interested in finding out more about Tesseract School’s scholarship program, including information about how to apply, should contact Scott Salk, Tesseract’s director of admissions, at 480.385.3673 or ssalk@tesseractschool.org.
