TESSERACT SCHOOL ANNOUNCES SPRING PRODUCTION OF BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
PHOENIX, ARIZONA—May 11, 2010—“Be our guest, be our guest” at Tesseract School’s middle school spring musical, “Beauty and the Beast.” Opening night is Thursday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Paradise Valley Community College theater with a special preshow concert by Tesseract's sixth-grade school band.
Tesseract’s annual middle school spring musical is an event the entire Tesseract community looks forward to every year—so much in fact, the performances consistently sell out. That is why starting with last year’s musical, performances were moved from the school’s stage to a professional theater.
This year’s production will bring Disney’s classic animated movie and the traditional French fairy tale to life for children and adults alike. “The students are all very excited to be performing at the Paradise Valley Community College theater,” said Terri Scullin, Tesseract School music and drama educator. “To be able to perform in a professional venue, with amazing costumes and backdrops at such young ages is a wonderful, authentic experience for all the students involved in this production.”
Part of Tesseract’s innovative, student-centered curriculum, and in keeping with its “whole child” approach, its middle and high school programs offer a variety of performing arts options that the students can take advantage of throughout the year including music classes, chorus, band, rock band, drama, musical theater and dramatic film. Through the drama and theater classes students learn pantomime, improvisation, character development and how to deliver monologues, as well as scene study and backstage elements of the theater.
In the spring semester, middle school students are given the opportunity to register for the musical theater elective. In this class students build upon the skills and knowledge they gained in drama or chorus as they prepare to participate in a large-scale musical theater production at the end of the school year. The students go through a weeklong audition process where they act, sing and dance for staff and members of the local theater community. This year the middle school band and percussion students will also perform with special preshow concerts at all three evening performances.
All proceeds from Tesseract’s performances of “Beauty and the Beast” will go to Tesseract’s performing arts fund. The shows run May 20 through May 22 at 6:30 p.m., with a matinee on May 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Paradise Valley Community College theater. Tickets are $15; to purchase tickets, or for more information, call 480.991.1770.
