FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE RUTH AND DAVID LEARNER SCHOLARSHIP FOR TESSERACT SCHOOL ANNOUNCED
PARADISE VALLEY, ARIZONA—January 17, 2012—Ellis G., a freshman at Tesseract School, is the first student to be awarded the Ruth and David Learner Scholarship for Tesseract School.
"Ellis embodies the zeal for learning and education that was envisioned when creating this scholarship,” said Nathan Learner, Tesseract School parent and board member. “We hope he is the first of many students who will gain access to a Tesseract education via the Learner Scholarship.
"The Ruth and David Learner Scholarship for Tesseract School was started by the family and funded by family and friends in August 2011 to honor David Learner’s memory. The scholarship was created to provide another opportunity for academically talented high school students who would thrive in Tesseract’s unique, innovative, student-centered program to attend the school who otherwise may not be able to afford to do so.
A talented student and well-rounded individual, throughout middle school Ellis participated in gifted programs and honors classes; thrived in several academic competitions, including spelling bees, science fairs, Math Olympiad and Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth competitions; and earned awards of distinction for top scores on nationwide exams, placing him in the top percentiles among high school juniors and seniors. In addition to his academic pursuits and accomplishments, Ellis’s interests include playing the clarinet and the piano, hiking, swimming, creating computer-aided design projects and caring for his family’s wide variety of adopted pets.
Ellis and his family were looking for a high school experience that would continue to nurture his enthusiasm for academics as well as his individual interests while preparing him for success in college and beyond. The start of his freshman year at another school was unfortunately not what he and his family had hoped it would be. As a result, his parents were concerned that Ellis’s passion for learning and education would be dampened. Part of the search for finding the right educational fit, and a good friend of Ellis’s who attends Tesseract, spurred the family’s interest in finding out more about the school.
“Tesseract’s learning environment is ideal for Ellis—it is personal, creative, challenging and meaningful,” said his father, Tyler. “Tesseract empowers students to achieve through positive encouragement and personal attention creating lifelong learners who are able to think creatively, analytically and with discernment. The start of his freshman year at another school was distressing to him, now he comes home and describes his classes as ‘awesome’ and ‘fantastic’ and his teachers as ‘really, really there for me.’ This school has been miraculous for him.”
In keeping with its commitment to academic excellence and its whole-child approach, Tesseract offers a variety of scholarships in the following areas: merit, math, science, technology, foreign language, literature, oration, humanities, performing arts and visual arts, leadership, entrepreneurialism, environmentalism and sustainability, community outreach and athletics. These scholarships are in addition to the Ruth and David Learner Scholarship and need-based financial aid.
