At Tesseract, service learning is an integral part of the school's curriculum for students in all grades. Through Kids Who Care, Tesseract’s school-wide service-learning program, students learn the importance of being an involved member of both the local and global community.

The Kids Who Care charities that Tesseract’s students and educators have selected expose students to a wide range of organizations, enabling them to develop a broad base of skills for problem solving and citizenship.

According to research compiled by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for the national initiative dedicated to service learning, students who participate in service learning are less likely to engage in “risk” behaviors, are more engaged and motivated in their studies and are more likely to develop a sense of civic and social responsibility.

Through Kids Who Care, students devote time to service-learning projects geared to their ages, their classroom curriculum, and for older students, their passions, such as making and delivering blankets to Crisis Nursery or painting a mural at the Wesley Community Center, an organization with which Tesseract students have developed a unique and personal relationship.

Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor graciously supported Tesseract’s Kids Who Care program by being the guest speaker for the kick-off event. She commended the students, saying “I very much approve of getting involved at a young age...your projects are just wonderful.” 

With the outstanding faculty, student and parental dedication to Kids Who Care, the program has been exceptional, and most importantly, students are learning firsthand that their individual acts can make a difference.
