Tesseract Breaks Ground For New Campus!
On Tuesday, February 12, 2008, Tesseract School
celebrated breaking ground for its new campus
at 40th Street and Shea. The historic event was
enjoyed by hundreds of Tesseract students and
community members.
The half-hour groundbreaking ceremony included
speeches from Nigel Taplin, Tesseract’s head of
school, Robert Engleman, co-chair of the Tesseract
Capital Campaign Committee, Katie Cobb, a
Phoenix City Council representative and Sam
Anderson, a current eighth-grade Tesseract student.
"This was the first time the students had visited the Shea campus. It was quite a moment for us all, sitting beside the foundations of the two academic halls, and overlooking the athletic field and the foundations of the sports pavilion,” noted Taplin. “It is truly exciting to see the
vision for the upper school and the Shea campus
quickly becoming a reality.”
With the addition of the new upper school at
the Shea campus, Tesseract has the opportunity
to build upon the proven practices of its
existing educational approach, and provide an
upper school program that will truly resonate
with students, tapping into their curiosity by
connecting real-world issues with hands-on,
experience-based learning. Tesseract’s innovative
programs include increased focus on international and sustainability issues, and educating students
to be critical and innovative thinkers, prepared to
excel in college and beyond.
“This is an incredible opportunity for Tesseract to
expand and offer a comprehensive education—from preschool through the senior year of upper
school—preparing students for a challenging
college experience and life beyond school,” said
Chris LaBonte, founding head of upper school.
“One of our top priorities is to prepare our
students to be compassionate citizens and to
thrive in a global society.”
Tesseract’s focus on environmental sustainability
not only sets its curriculum apart, but also its
campus, with buildings that were designed
utilizing green-building practices through site
development, water savings, energy efficiency,
selection of materials and indoor environmental
quality for its occupants.
